Healthcare
Information on public and private healthcare, insurance, pharmacies, and emergency services for expats in Montenegro.
Overview
Montenegro offers a mix of public and private healthcare services. Expats should understand the differences, insurance requirements, and how to access care. Emergency services are available nationwide, but the quality and availability of care can vary by region.
Public Healthcare
- Public healthcare is managed by the Ministry of Health and funded through the Health Insurance Fund.
- Residents with health insurance can access public clinics and hospitals at low or no cost.
- Foreigners with temporary or permanent residency can register for public health insurance (see official links below).
- Public facilities may have limited English-speaking staff and longer wait times, especially outside major cities.
Private Healthcare
- Private clinics and hospitals are available in major cities and tourist areas.
- Many private providers offer English-speaking doctors and shorter wait times.
- Private healthcare is paid out-of-pocket or via private insurance. Costs are generally lower than in Western Europe but higher than public care.
Health Insurance
- Public health insurance is required for residents and is available to foreigners with residency permits.
- Private health insurance is recommended for expats, especially for access to private clinics and international coverage.
- Travel insurance is required for short-term stays and visa applications.
Pharmacies
- Pharmacies ("apoteka") are widely available in cities and towns.
- Some medications require a prescription; others are available over the counter.
- 24-hour pharmacies exist in larger cities.
Emergency Services
- Emergency number: 124 (ambulance), 122 (police), 123 (fire).
- Emergency care is available at public hospitals and some private clinics.
- Bring your health insurance card or proof of insurance when seeking emergency care.
